ChatGPT website updates

How to update your website with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT can help plan and write website changes. To apply those changes, it needs an authorized editing workflow or a coding tool such as Codex working with your website files. Pasting your website URL into a chat does not grant permission to edit it.

Choose advice, a manual edit or connected editing

For a few lines of copy, you can ask ChatGPT for wording, check the facts and paste the result into your site's existing editor. That does not require moving your website or connecting a repository.

For changes to page layouts or multiple files, use a coding workflow with access to the project. This walkthrough uses Codex with a Git-tracked local website. Your available apps and permissions may differ. A read-only connection is not a publishing connection.

If your site is locked inside a hosted builder, follow that builder's supported editing method. Do not assume downloaded HTML includes its backend, forms or account settings. Start with the existing-website checklist if you are unsure what you own.

Let the agent inspect before editing

Open the correct website project in Codex and confirm that it is the current version. Keep a working backup and use a separate branch. Ask:

Read this website project and explain how to preview it, test it and publish it. Identify the production branch and any action that publishes automatically. Do not edit files, install anything, connect new accounts or publish yet.

The answer should identify the actual project, not give you generic hosting instructions. Compare it with your handoff notes. Stop if the agent cannot locate the current site or its publishing process.

A practical example: change a website button

On Hire Brian's homepage, the main button is labeled "Submit your website." A small, reviewable experiment would be changing only that label to "Show me your website." This example is a proposed exercise, not a reported conversion improvement.

In the homepage hero only, change the button label from "Submit your website" to "Show me your website." Preserve its destination, tracking and styling. Do not change the navigation button or form submit button. Show me a mobile and desktop preview. Do not publish.

For your own site, replace those words with your real button text and page. Ask the agent to show every changed file. The right result is the requested label change with the same working destination, not a redesigned form or a new lead-capture service.

Review in Codex and in the browser

Open the changes view to compare before and after. OpenAI's code-review documentation describes reviewing local changes and asking Codex for a separate review. Use that as an extra check, not as a substitute for opening the preview yourself.

  • Read the button on desktop and mobile. Does the new text fit?
  • Activate it. Does it reach the same form or booking destination?
  • Check the unchanged navigation and form buttons.
  • Ask whether tests passed and whether any checks were skipped.

Do not authorize a real form submission just to test a label. Test delivery separately when the form's behavior changes.

Publish only the version you reviewed

When the preview is right, approve that change through your established publishing process. Be explicit about committing, pushing and deploying because your host may connect those actions.

Open the public URL after deployment. If you still see the old version, check the deployed revision and cache before asking the agent to redo the edit. Keep the previous working revision available.

What ChatGPT cannot decide for you

It cannot verify your business hours, promises or prices without reliable information from you. A plausible-looking page can still have broken links, missing tracking or incorrect claims. You approve the business content and the launch.

For layout errors or broken behavior, use the website repair guide. For a different editing tool, see updating a website with Claude. If you need a site with this workflow already connected, my agentic website design service includes setup and hands-on training.
