For business owners
What does it mean to own your website?
Website ownership means your business controls its domain, source code, hosting accounts and data. You can give a developer access, remove that access, and move the site without starting over.
A login to edit a page is useful, but it is not the whole handoff. Before replacing an outdated website, ask what you will actually receive and which accounts will be in your name.
The four things to keep in your accounts
- Domain: You control the registrar account, renewal and domain settings. Moving the website does not necessarily mean moving your domain registration.
- Source code: You can access the files and their change history. For Hire Brian projects, these live in your GitHub account.
- Hosting: You control the hosting account and billing. Hire Brian's preferred setup is Cloudflare, in the client's account.
- Data and connected tools: You retain access to form submissions, analytics and integrations. Check how to export data before choosing a provider.
Ownership does not eliminate recurring bills. Hosting, domain renewals, AI subscriptions and any paid integrations remain your responsibility. It does give you a clearer choice of who maintains the site.
How do AI-assisted website updates work?
An AI-ready website is a project an AI coding agent can work on, with a review process before changes reach customers. It is not a promise that an ordinary chat window can publish to any website.
- Ask for one change. For example: "Change our Saturday hours to 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the contact page. Leave the other hours alone."
- Review the proposed changes. Your connected agent edits the website project. Check the preview on a phone and a desktop, including any forms or links it touched.
- Approve and publish. The owner decides what goes live. Keep the previous working version available so a bad change can be reversed.
Hire Brian includes agent connection, hands-on training, written instructions and a video guide. ChatGPT or Claude can be part of that workflow with the appropriate coding agent and account access. Complex changes still need careful testing, and future repair work is quoted separately.
For the full process, read how to update an existing website with AI. The ChatGPT and Claude guides cover separate editing workflows, and the repair guide explains what to check when a change goes wrong.
What should survive a website redesign?
A new design should not discard the useful work in the old site. Start with an inventory of pages, content, forms, integrations and domain settings. Identify the URLs bringing visitors or inquiries before changing them.
- Keep important page addresses when practical; map permanent redirects for those that change.
- Move useful content and check titles, descriptions, internal links and mobile layouts.
- Test form delivery and analytics before switching the domain to the new site.
- Preserve business-email settings or plan an explicit migration, then verify email still works.
- Keep a backup and a launch checklist, with access and ongoing responsibilities documented.
Redirects and careful migration reduce avoidable problems, but they do not guarantee that rankings or traffic stay the same. Google's site-move guidance explains how to plan URL changes and monitor the transition.
Does AI-ready mean ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. A site that is easy for an AI agent to edit and a site that gets cited in AI answers are different things. Search visibility starts with accessible pages, useful content, clear business information and relevant links.
Google says its normal SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode; there is no special AI schema or required AI text file. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler. Allowing search crawlers removes one obstacle, but does not guarantee indexing, ranking or citation.
The practical goal is to make your services, pricing, expertise and answers easy to find and understand, then measure real search visits and inquiries over time.
