Claude website updates
How to update your website with Claude.
Use Claude Code with your website project to make reviewable changes to the actual files. Start with a working version, define what must stay unchanged, and check the preview before you approve a deployment.
Claude can help draft website copy in a conversation. Editing the website itself is a separate step that needs access to its files or a supported integration. This guide uses Claude Code's desktop workflow, not the assumption that every Claude chat can publish to your domain.
Open the current website project
Use the project folder or repository that builds your current website. Confirm the account owner, the production branch and how to open a preview. Save a known working version and work on a separate branch or staging copy.
Keep access limited to the project. Do not paste passwords or customer records into the conversation. If the site is inside a builder or CMS, check the existing-site editing options before trying to change exported files.
Give Claude the rules your site depends on
A short project instruction file can record the business facts, design rules, testing steps and publishing process. In Claude Code, that file is commonly CLAUDE.md. For a business website, useful instructions include:
- Keep the approved company name, prices, contact details and service area unless the owner supplies replacements.
- Preserve existing URLs, form destinations and analytics unless the task explicitly changes them.
- Run the project's tests and check mobile layouts before presenting a change.
- Never push to the production branch or deploy without explicit approval.
Instructions help, but they are not an access-control system. Anthropic's guidance distinguishes written instructions from enforced controls. Use repository and deployment permissions to protect production as well.
A practical example: explain a service more clearly
Suppose your service page says "We handle everything," but visitors need to know what is actually included. Supply the exact facts instead of asking Claude to invent a better offer:
On our website redesign service page, replace "We handle everything" with "Design, content migration, forms, analytics and AI-agent training are included." Keep the price, exclusions, URLs, contact form and all other sections unchanged. Show the edited files and a preview. Do not publish.
Those are example instructions; use your own approved scope. Ask Claude to explain where the text comes from if it appears in several places. Editing a shared component could affect more pages than the one you intended.
Review the diff and preview
Claude Code's desktop documentation covers project work, previews and a changes view. Inspect the differences to see what Claude actually edited, then open the rendered page.
Check the service paragraph on mobile and desktop. Follow the contact link. Confirm the package price and exclusions are unchanged. If the project has tests, ask Claude to run them and report failures, not just summarize the change.
If the preview is wrong, describe the specific difference and ask for a narrow correction. Repeatedly asking for a complete redesign makes it harder to identify what broke.
Approve the change and verify the public page
Use your documented publishing process only after approving the preview. A push or merge may trigger hosting automatically. State whether you are authorizing a saved draft, a preview deployment or the public launch.
When deployment finishes, reopen the live page and check the same details. Keep the previous revision available. For a problem, follow the AI website troubleshooting checklist before making more edits.
What should your builder hand over?
You need the code, account access, test instructions, a preview process and a clear publishing checklist. The ownership guide explains how those pieces fit together.
My website rebuild package includes agent connection, hands-on training and a video guide. If your existing site is already suitable, coaching may be enough. Prefer OpenAI's tools? Use the separate ChatGPT and Codex walkthrough.
Need help with your website?
Send me your current site and we can discuss a rebuild or coaching. The client-owned website package is $2,499 one time for up to 40 pages, with 2 weeks turnaround. Hosting and AI subscriptions are separate.
